Checklist of Vascular Plants

Despite its rich botanical heritage, the Bruce-Grey area had lacked an up-to-date published checklist of wild vascular plants until 1994. This publication, now in its third edition, has fulfilled that need. Material for the checklist came from many sources. Most of the information relating to species, distribution and local rarity was assembled by Joe Johnson for the Ministry of Natural Resources (Johnson, 1990). Subsequent additions were gleaned from post 1989 inventory reports of Areas of Natural and Scientific Interest (A.N.S.I.) and wetlands, from visits to herbaria at Lakehead, Waterloo and Guelph universities, also by personal communication from Joe Johnson, Michael Oldham and others (who are listed in the acknowledgements).

The checklist includes 1447 taxa (species, subspecies and hybrids) from 136 families. Of these, seventy-two are listed as "rare" in the province; and eight are "at risk."
